FAQS
Most local councils require a tree survey (following BS5837 guidance) to be submitted with any planning applications for work that could potentially impact trees on or near the construction site. This ensures valuable trees are properly accounted for and given legal protection during development.
A complete tree survey has three main stages: 1) The initial tree survey, where all trees are inspected, measured, and assigned a categorisation based on their condition. 2) An arboricultural impact assessment identifying which trees will need removing or protecting. 3) For larger projects, an arboricultural method statement providing step-by-step instructions for avoiding harm to remaining trees.
Even for smaller projects like home extensions, if any trees could potentially be affected by the construction, most councils will request a simple tree survey. This typically just requires the initial survey stage to record the trees and demonstrate they have been properly considered.
